Synthetic CannabinoidsK2 SPICE

First synthesized in 1988 by Clemson University organic chemist John W. Huffman, synthetic cannabinoids were an attempt to target the endocannabinoid receptors in the human body. Essentially, they were attempting to target the cannabinoid receptors in the immune system that are tied up with inflammation, without affecting the receptors in the central nervous system; the central nervous system receptors are tied into the intoxicating effects (most commonly associated with THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana). In other words, they were hoping to find a medication with the pain-relieving properties of marijuana without the “high”.
